OKAY, I'm going to respond to the constant movie/TV questions that I get asked by roughly a zillion of you. Here we go...
Q: Are the books being made into a movie/tv series?
A: Maybe. The series has been optioned by Empire Pictures. Now I sit back and wait like the rest of y'all to see what happens. No, I don't have any new news. I'll post when I have something I can tell you.
Q: Are you making the books into a movie/TV series?
A: NO. Authors don't do that. We option the right to production companies or movie studios to use our books/worlds as a basis for movies or TV shows. So, no, Kristin and I aren't making movies. We've given our lovely producer the right to, and that's about where our involvement ends.
Q: PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE don't make them into movies! It just ruins everything and destroys the minds of the young.
A: Too late. We've already optioned them (see above for definition). And Kristin and I don't think movies/TV destroy the minds of the young. We think laziness and a sense of entitlement do that. Oh, and drugs, too. We happen to like movies and TV. A lot.
Q: Well, then, make them make a really really good movie/TV series. Okay?
A: I can't MAKE my producer do anything, although he is quite nice and I heart him. (His name is Michael Birnbaum if you'd like to google him and send him the zillions of emails about making the series into a movie that you send me - he can actually do something about it.) I'm not going to be involved with the screenplay. That's not my field of expertise. I write the books. Period. Michael does respect my opinion, and we talk frequently. That's about as much influence as I have. Oh, and his teenage daughter, Savannah, hearts the House of Night. I'm counting on her to keep her dad straight. ("Hi Savvy!")
Q: I'm perfect to play Zoey/Aphrodite/Stevie Rae/Damien/Erik/either Twin/Duchess/Nala/Neferet, etc., etc., so could you pick me to be in the movie/TV series? Could I audition for you?
A: As with the screenplay, I'm not going to have anything to do with casting any production. I don't know squat about actors/actresses! Hell, I'd pick Kristin to be Zoey and Tom Welling to be Erik (he's too old, by the by, and so is Kristin). And I'd pick myself to be Neferet (I don't look anything like Neferet). Or maybe I'd be Aphrodite (uh, I'm wayyyyyy too old to be Aphrodite). See what I mean? I'm not good at picking actors, so AGAIN I leave that to the experts. If the series actually begins to film and IF they have open auditions, I'm sure Michael will tell me and I'll post the information for all of you.
Q: But what about the videos you send out? Are those the actors for the movie? And I hate/love them and think they look perfect/too old!
A: The videos from the www.houseofnightseries.com site are book trailers and ONLY book trailers. They were produced by my fabulous publisher as fun extras and teasers for my fans. They have nothing to do with any movie/tv series. And for the record: I helped choose the models. NO I DO NOT THINK THEY LOOK TOO OLD. If I did, I wouldn't have chosen them. Also, I can't put you in contact with the models. Yes, the model who plays Zoey is the same lovely girl, whose real name is Tara, who portrays Zoey on all the book covers. I think she's wonderful.
And while we're on the subject - I like the tattoos from the videos. Are they the exact tattoos I see in my mind as I write the books? Hell, no. How could anyone reproduce that? I suppose I could, but I can't draw at all. I enjoy seeing different interpretations of my world. It's all done in a wonderful spirit of fun, and I heart that!
Sooooooo, basically I don't have any new news about the series coming to film. Yes, it's optioned. Yes, it could happen. No, I won't be doing it because authors write books - they don't make films (or at least not usually). I'm waiting with the rest of you to see what happens.
And, please, spare me the diatribes about film ruining books. I don't buy into it and don't care to hear/read it. Kristin and I are happy about the possibility. If we weren't we wouldn't have signed the contract. No one made us; we wanted to. Some of my very, very favorite movies are based on books: Lord of the Rings, Dances with Wolves, Gone with the Wind, Pride and Prejudice, Secret Life of Bees, Harry Potter (yes! I heart all of them!), etc., etc. No, I'm not scared about HoN coming to film IF IT EVER HAPPENS. Relax. Let's just go along for the ride. If it sucks we can have a good laugh and eat that yummy popcorn with way too much butter...

I love the HoN novels and if they do get made into a movie I will be the first person with tickets. I have read all of the "House of Night" novels, and i just wanted to tell you that you are a true inspiration to me. I have not yet written a book, and I have just started to LOVE reading. I have really considered writing a novel of my own. I am looking foward to seeing you at your book signing in Norman on the 14th of March. I have read the twilight series, but my honest opinion of Stephanie Meyer's books is that they are really long and seem to drag on about nothing,dont get me wrong they are great books, but still. Your books have lots of great details without dragging on about nothing. This is my favorite series I have read!Ever! Ms. Cast you and your daughter are amazing writers. Thank you for all of the advise I am definitely going to OCCC to look and see if they have any writing classes for me to take to learn more on how to creat a great novel. Writing has always been my life, I have always loved poetry, and essays hav always come easy to me. Being in school is hard when your trying to devote your time to writing a book but I have set up a deadline for me to have an outline done, I think this will help me alot. Are you happy that the series will be turned into a movie and what movie rate do you think the movie will be rated -- PG-13 or Rated R maybe? Because, if the movie is PG-13 then I would totally see it...but if it's rated R then I'm gonna have to get it on DVD (if it does come out). And have you seen the fan cast of the series of YouTube, because I see a lot. I hope to see it in movie theater (so I can get some yummy popcorn and cool drink and sweet, sweet candy) or on TV (where I can see at my TV and eat all kinds of snacks in my room, hehe).

Will you please give me an idea of the age group you target with your books. My 12 year old daughter has read all the Potter and Stephanie Meyer books, so I thought she would enjoy your series. Unfortunately, she found a very serious, and inappropriate, swear word on page 13 of "Marked." Although I can almost condone some words, I just can't accept the need to use the "f" word in any context. I'm allowing my daughter finish reading "Marked" because she is enjoying it, however, I'm curious if the word is used in all your books?

Andrea - I'm happy about the option. Don't have a clue about rating, as I said in the blog entry I won't have much to do with the series going to film. Yep - being asked the same thing over and over does get tedious, especially when I've answered the question many times and that answer is easily found on the net, but now a bunch of answers are in one place for easy access.
Kay - Kristin and I think 16 on up is around our target audience, though I was reading everything from Eric Segal's LOVE STORY to torrid romances from the time I was eleven or so. I allowed Kristin to read whatever she wished to read when she was a minor - I just read the books with her so we could discuss. One of the things I like best about our country is that we each get to make the decision about what is appropriate and what isn't - and we get to make that decision for ourselves, but not for everyone else. You are definitely not going to consider my YA series appropriate. It has realistic language and situations and that includes the F word; high school today (actually in the 70s too) includes the F word. Happy reading elsewhere!

It's painful but true. Some books that get made into movies or like do end up being awful. I remember reading Fine Things by Danielle Steele and the book made me cry but then they made it into a tv movie that was just awful!. The Harry Potter books have all been well done in the movies and personally I think the movie version of LOTR was better than the books. That's just my opinion though. But in the end, whether a book is made into a quality movie or not is the luck of the draw. It's whether or not the person who optioned the book picks thw right people to do the screenplay and take the story in the right direction.
All screenplays are different from the books because movies are a different medium than books. Not everything that goes into the book will make it into the movies. It can't due to time contraints. But I don't believe that making the books into films is what ruins them. It's the people who make them into movies who stray far away from what made the novels great.
LafontL - I can't believe you're asking me the definition of a word! As I used to say to the kids in my classroom: USE YOUR OWN BRAIN, NOT MINE. Look it up yourself.

Kathy - I agree. It's pretty much the luck of the draw for the author, unless she's retained screenplay rights, etc., which I didn't. That's not my medium and I don't have the time or desire to learn the format right now. We'll see what happens. Honestly, I'll be shocked if the books ever actually find their way to the screen in any format...

I really want to write a novel myself. Also, my mother and I have always talked about writing some books. Thanks for the inspiration. Tying to get her to get her butt in gear, now that's a different story.
Also, congrats on the books possibly being made into movies or a tv series. Both mediums have their pros and cons. I can't wait to see which one it is! Lafont it seems a bit impertinent of you that you keep pestering P.C. Cast with definitions to words, particularly the word savvy. Just look it up in a dictionary! Sheesh! It takes less that a minute! You'll expand your own vocabulary that way. I recommend that you do that. Try buying a word a day calendar too, those are neat, either that or read more.

Thanks so much for asking about OZ! Yeah the fires are still burning! I don't live in that part of the country, I am in Queensland which is a long long way away. However everyone is doing what they can, donations and such. You have probably had the koala email? (if not I would be happy to send) The wild animals are that despearate for food and water they are approaching humans to get it. Very sad!! Its actually flooding in the north too! I dunno, OZ is falling apart!

Yes we are in Autum now, you wouldn't think so as it is still so hot! Victoria are still having temps in the 40's. We here in QLD are in the mid 30's. Its all good, what doesn't kill ya, only makes you stronger hey?!!
I just read your blog P.C. and I absolutely agree with that authors are not producers, totally different words and meanings. Also the models you have in your videos and front cover are not that old. I thought Tara was actually around 17/18. My sister looks like her in the way that people believe they could be older. So I love all of them. I love the tattoos they are beautiful. As for the color I really could care less what color they are, for the designs themselves speak for the whole thing.
I do hope the books get made into movies, cuz not everybody (acutally very few people) read books. Heck, if I'm not sure about the book I'll usually see the movie before reading the book. I bet alot of people do that. I think making the series into a viewing production is just another way for more people to be entertained and get sucked into the daily life of Zoey and her friends! Thank you for the series.
Ms. Castt, can you give me a small hint of what will happen in hunted? i am really excited for the 5th book in the hon series and if i wait any longer i might go crazy.

some of us really like PC's books and can't wait. its not like we're (actually, I'm speaking for myself here) gonna kill somebody for it to come sooner, we're just a little wistful and excited.
Lafont, I just was pointing out the fact that P.C. Cast has bascially given the readers and fans the first two chapters of the book. There is no need to want anything more than that because the book is coming out so soon. Suspense only makes some things better. I suggest that you stop being so demanding and take advantage of what she has made available to the reader.

Many of the kids who are posting are 12 and 13 or so - they don't know any better. If it doesn't piss me off, it sure as hell shouldn't be bugging you. I was simply wondering how many books you intended to make and which DELICIOUS guy do you think you might place Zoey with next? Are you finally going to settle on one she's already been with? I am a huge fan of the House Of Night novels. I bought the 5th book, Hunted, yesterday and I finished it earlier today. One word, AMAZING!! If they do make the books into a movie or tv series I would definitely watch it, but I would be way to scared that it would just plain suck because the way my mind portrays it is how I want to see it. You know what I mean? But on the other hand, they are by far my favorite books and I'm a really big reader and love books! I have one question about the books: Is there going to be a sixth book written? Hunted ended with a bunch of big questions and I am pretty sure that you would have to write another one to answer the questions. If you do write another one, when will it be published and sent out to the stores?

I LOVE the House Of Night novels. I never really liked reading but these books got me into reading. I did a book report on this series and my class absolutely loved it Oh and i got a good grade on it!! Any way your great keep the good work up!!
I'm working on TEMPTED right now. It'll be released late Oct/early November. Zoey's journey is far from over, but I don't know an exact count on how many books it'll take to tell the story.
Chandra - as I already said about a bazillion times - I won't have anything to do with movie/TV series filming/casting/screenwriting/details. So I have not one clue where they'd film it if it ever makes it to film.

I actually love the models that were picked for the teasers. That guy you picked for Eric, whoa! I had to go back and reread Untamed with that scene between him and Zoey when she drinks his blood *fans herself* Totally steamy! And the models for Damien and Jack were just too perfect!! That is totally how I picture Jack, just the sweetest face. I think you did a wonderful job in picking those models for book teasers.
When the movie does come out I will be the first in line and yes I will be a 28 year old black girl dressed up with vamp tats on my face waiting to see Marked.
I am an avid reader and I love love the written word. When everything in my life goes to crap I just whole myself up in the bathroom and open up a book and lose myself in it for house. And I want to thank you and your daughter for giving me books about vampires (my fav mythical creatures) to lose myself in.
I am a Twilight fan, but to me Bella Swan was a flat character. S he didn't have a personality when she meet Edward and then the just gave herself over to him totally and without reservation and then there was no more Bella, it was just Edward. And what I like about Zoey is that even though she wants a relationship she wants to be her own person. She makes mistakes and she doesn't know everything. She grows and she learns. I love that.
And as an African American, I love that you made the main character a Native American. If nothing else hooked me that would have.
After Harry Potter this is my favorite series of all time.

Ms. Cast,i like you.... you are like i said a million times a good author. you tell it like you see it and you write books that keep people on the edge of their seat, i write poetry occasionally and the funny part is they always seem to rhyme. i think really it doesnt matter who zoey ends up with. she's great at picking and choosing. i hope that they make it into a movie i think it would be the best movie. heck i think it would be a heck of a lot better than twighlight lol. thank you miss cast you have answered all my questions so far..

Before I started reading your books I was completly obssed with twilight, but then i read your bools and its ike Twilight doesnt even compare!!!! And its writing like yours that makes me want to become a writer. I've come up with alot of ideas for a book, but it's like the things i think up of dont make sense with the things i thought up of before. I get real frustrated when i start changing my mind about an idea. I just dont know how to put them together. Ijuerrero - look in the archives of this blog for my advice for aspiring authors post. That'll give you a good place to start. And, basically, no one can tell you how to write - you just need to educate yourself about the business and then write write write.

Hey, I just wanted to let you know that your HoN series has been a total inspiration in my class. It mostly started out with me reading Marked, but when I finished it so quickly my friends started passing it around in a day to day borrow type of a situation - most of the people I go to school with are rather fast readers. In any case. It's moving around pretty quickly and everyone's growing as addicted as I've become. I myself hope to be a successful writer one of these days, if I ever get around to finishing up my stories that is. Kudos to your writing style, I absolutely Love It!
I think it's nice that you respond to your fans this way, it's wonderful to have the actual author of such a magnificent book return your words unlike so many out there!

I just wanted to say I agree with you concerning your book to movie opinion. A lot of times I don't know about the books then a movie comes out and if I like it I try and read or listen to the audio book. Twilight and Harry Potter are excellent examples for me. I have listened to all of them on audio book, due to my dyslexia.
Which actually brings me to my compliments on your books. I know I'm not your typical reader being 33 yrs old, but I have to say yours and your daughter's writing skills are terrific. Because of my dyslexia I have a hard time reading novels, but the NoH series just jumps off the page at me. I had never heard of the NoH series and was looking for something to do while I was stuck in my car for up to 9 hours waiting for my boyfriend to get off work. I saw Marked and thought it sounded very interesting, that was 3 days ago. I am now almost done with Betrayed. I have never read books so fast in my life. I just wanted to thank you and your daughter for doing such a great job at developing this world and these characters. I can't wait to read the rest.
By the way, after talking so much about them my niece can't wait until she is old enough to read them (she is only 10) and my boyfriend started reading Marked this morning. hee hee

I would LOVE if the books turned into a TV series but if the movie option is picked up instead I'll still love them all (just have my heart set on a TV series). Otherwise - did you know your editor missed a typo in Untamed?! Instead of saying 'her eyes' it says 'here yes' on pg 36 (near the end of chapter 4).
Keep writing please! I'm hooked and can't put the books down.

Jen - the people from the book trailers aren't actors; they're models. So I wouldn't imagine the director would want to use them.
P.C Cast i have been reading your books and are loving them and i have been thinking about it and i think it would be a good idea to make thme into a movie there are so many people at union right now that are reading your books and are loving them so much. and they also would love to see them be made into movies.

im very new to your books,...but i started reading them this past week and i finish the 1st and 2nd book(marked and betryed. im now reading chosen!!!
but what i wanted to say is i think you guys should make the house of night series into a tv series!!! b/c i really would like to see how yall would display the charater in your books. and i would really like to see the part in marked when...(zoey and heath in the tree. when zoey is drinking the heath blood)...the beginning of imprint!!!

Hey my name is bliss i have a obsessive prob with HoN it is the best book i have ever read and i aint just sayin' that cuz im afraid you will get mad i started book one on exactly 4/1 and ended the series 4/10 im not exageratin. i just wanted to let you know that when i read ur books i have an exact view of the characters its amazin how u write(again not just sayin that) u dont have to write back or notin so its all good but since everyone on this website are totally brain washed in the movie makin part, Even though it would totally be sweet if you and kristin did, i just wanted to know if you and kristin are going to make more HoN books after temped? Yep - I base several characters on real people. Zoey is based on Kristin when she was a teenager. But the real people are only outlines. The actual characters are fiction and as they develop they take on their own personalities and characteristics.

i think its a great idea to make the books into a movie or tv show but i thing the cast for them should be the people that you used on the books website(but you should recast erik that is nothing how me or my best friend imagened him)
Martie - I don't think any of the kids used on the website are actors - they're just models. Well, except for Neferet. I believe she's an actress, too. And, of course, I won't have anything to do with casting the movie. Though I do think the Erik model is cute and, apparently, a nice guy, too.
About "keeping all the models but Erik" If there were any say in it I'd re-cast for Neferet. She just isnt what you described in the book. But I also believe that it would probably be to hard to cast someone to a T.

I'll start the next book right away. I prefer to write them back to back. As to being obsessed, I highly recommend you vary your reading. Try lots of different books and lots of different authors. The more diverse your reading tastes, the smarter you'll be. Don't get stuck in one genre...

i realise that you are very busy and i realise all you have said about you have nothing to do with the making of the movie but, i sincerely ask you to SUGGEST that chance crawford (known as nate archibald in the gossip girl series) is invited to audition for teh part of erik. he is everything that erik should be and is perfect for the part. so please please please suggest he is invited for an audition and by the way i love your books. actualy correct that, im in love with them! i am from ireland and cant wait till untamed and hunted comes to ireland. i was devestated when i finished marked, betrayed and chosen and found out the other two do not come here till august and september. and then i will also have to wait for tempted to come here. it will probably be at teh end of 2010 :C

Although I do agree that movies that are made after books are not as good, and sometimes nowhere near as good as the books, I do think that the fans of the book would still appreciate the fact that the series was made into a movie, and possibly a series of movies. And the only reason it's not as good as the book is because sometimes, things need to be explained different to get the point across with a two hour time limit. Though I dont think it would be as good as Marked or any of the HoN books, I do support your desicion, and your daughters, in allowing them to option the series. I know that I'll be at my town's movie theater the night (or day) it comes out with tattoos all over my face.
I also wanted to say thank you SO much. Your books got me interested in reading again. I hadn't picked up a book for about 4 years before I picked up Marked one day at the store. I immediately fell in love and read the book in a day. Before this book series, you could say that I was a "troubled" girl. The HoN series kind of helped me change my life around and it changed the way I felt about myself. I've read countless numbers of books since that day, including the rest of the HoN books that have been released so far, but the House of Night series is BY FAR my favorite and will probably always be my favorite. I have an obsession with vampyres and I love the concept of magick and I wish they were both actually real (like how they're portrayed in the book.)

i love the HoN books they were amazing. They were way better than the twilight series. I think the movie will be great. Just don't have Cathrine Hardwicke direct it.(shes a bad director look at what she did to Twilight, it sucked)

I think this would be a great movie... Me and my husband have read and absolutely love the HON series. I cannot wait until Tempted comes out. I read the complete series in 5 days and cannot convey how much I would love to see this as a movie. Except the people in the pictures you have for Zoey and the other cast on the HON web site, please dont make those the people in the movies. I do not think the people fit the characters.

With how famous these books are I'm sure they will be made into a movie, my concern really is who is going to play Zoey. I saw some videos on the house of night serious website, and I was gravely disapointed. Please do not let a fully grown Women play her part I know you may not have control over the movies but your opinion seriously matters to many people. Bells - yes, there will be many HoN books. As to tattoos: each book is an artist's rendition of what he/she sees as Zoey's tattoo. There is no right answer. You can imagine anything you want.

I can tell you right now, as an avid reader and "older" person(46), this series is wonderful. I am waiting with baited breath for Tempted to come out. I am currently reading 3 series of books, well 2 now that I have finished one. They are, Twilight series (finished that series), House of Night, and True Blood the Sookies Stackhouse series. I search everywhere to get the next copies of them all. I live in australia and I will tell you that I love watching books made into movies/series. I do believe though that you definately should read the books first then watch the movies/series. Ms. Cast and Kristin, I feel you both are very talented and I will be reading everything I can that you both have written or co-written. Keep up the EXCELLENT work!!!!

No - the kids in the video book trailers are mostly models and not actors.

Two:The HoN series has inspired me to write more often then I use to, and I find my self digging deeper into my own ideas, and developing some from years ago. So I guess I could thank you and kristin for writing such inspirational books!
I love all the Harry Potter Movies also and im going to see Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince the day it opens. Also i think the HoN books would be great as movies i just hope they dont change the plot of the book or anything like they did between the book and the movie of My Sisters Keeper. Also all of the models you have for the book trailers are amazing the best is neferet. Shes also my favorite character in all of the books.

Ms. Cast, I just wanted to let you know that I have read all the HON series and enjoyed all of them. I cannot wait until Tempted comes out. I hope there are more to come. I hope that they either become a movie or a tv show. I think that the models who play the characters in the clips on the websites would be perfect to play in the movie. They all fit the characters perfectly. Please do not stop writing the HON series.

Ms. Cast, I love the HON series SO much! I think it is way different from all the other vampire books/series that I've read. I love all the twists in the series and the humor seems to just appear at the most unexpected moments and it makes all of the books super entertaining!
I just wanted to say that I love your books and I think it would be amazing if they were turned into movies. Because of how the books are, the way they take place in only a couple days is perfect. That way they could fit as much detail from the story into the movies without having to shorten it! Great work by the way!

I am afraid to say that I have only recently discoverd your books. On one hand that is bad, on the other very good! seeing as to how I didn't have to suffer the suspense of waiting for another novel until I had read everybook up to hunted. Now I am feeling the pain of craving Tempted! I was so disappointed when the Twilight books stopped and I suppose I have been searching for a while for something to fill my need. I just felt the need to thank you and your daughter, Kristin for your beautiful writing. I am anxious for the movie if it is to come and respect all decisions you make with your characters, books, and movie. So far your intuition has yet to dissapoint me when it comes to your choosing. Once again thank you dearly for your wonderful books. I bought all that were availiable at one time and didn't stop reading until two days ago. I now feel desolate and deserted if you can imagine by my lack of insightful characters and good reading. I can not wait to read Tempted. Please keep up the good work!!

Your quite welcome, but in telling you all of that, I forgot the main thing I had come here to ask. I suppose I just got carried away. Anyways, in your interveiw with ABC you say you based Zoey on your daughter Kristin, this had me wondering if that meant that she had also experienced the guy troubles that Zoey faces or if these parts truly are fictional? I guess what I'm trying to ask is does just Zoey's character traits reflect Kristin or has Kristin gone through certain hardships like in the book? I mean I am sure the mother and step-loser is all fictional of coarse, I guess I was wondering just how much the two girls have in common.

It's just Zoey's personality traits I based on Kristin, and none of her personal experiences. Those are all fictionalized.

The house of night books are pretty much the best i've ever read. yah i'm sure alot of people say that too and it probably doesn't make a difference if i say it or someone else. but on the houseofnight website u should add a spotlight video of james stark. he's really good looking. lol. and i think he is a important character.

My dad found ur 1st book and brought to me to read and i fell in love with it. i would spend all day re-reading the books until the next would come out. I really enjoy your books but i wish they were longer, i am a fast reader and i always get through your books fairly quickly. I also really enjoyed the short story collection you did with your daughter and other authors it was very entertaining and i think another would be pretty cool. I loved the HoN books they were great i couldnt quit reading ive already reserved a copy of Tempted. I'm 26 and just love them they are a great read. I was really wanting to ask when they do decide to cast the movie will you let us know? I just hope they dont skip out on the good things in the movie like they have in past movies! But i bet whatever they decide it will come out great! I just wanted to write and tell you i can't wait for the other books to come out.
